Glare is the most common failure of outdoor lighting — and the least discussed in the early design phase. A luminaire that is technically adequate on paper can still fail its project if its beam is uncontrolled, its mounting height misjudged, or its luminance too high for the viewing angle.
Low-glare design starts with the geometry of the beam, not with the lumen count. Shielding, tilt and cut-off angles determine whether a walkway reads as calm and safe or as a strip of harsh pools.
For the specifier, the practical rule is simple: check the photometric file, respect the recommended mounting heights, and test a sample in the real environment before committing.
